Chesham and Amersham - what the Candidates say

Assembled from campaign literature, and recent quotes

“High Speed 2 (HS2) is the proposed high speed rail link connecting London with Birmingham, and subsequently other major cities in the North of England. HS2 aims to cut travel times, increase capacity and spread economic benefits throughout the UK. Whilst I acknowledge these aims, I am sceptical that this project will achieve these goals and am very aware of the implications the current “proposed” route will have on the environment, particularly the Chilterns, and the quality of life of all of us in Chesham and Amersham.

I oppose HS2 and I am making constant representations to the Government expressing both my own and my constituents’ concerns.”

"Our rail network should not be in private hands – I want it properly invested in and working for all the people who want to use it. That’s why I’m against HS2."

"His unshakeable commitment to state education, the NHS, full employment and his opposition to HS2 are among the reasons he wants to represent Chesham and Amersham"

What’s the biggest threat to your constituency?

Most people I talk to are concerned about HS2.  Chiltern Liberal Democrats have opposed HS2 for many years and were the only party to send a petition in to Westminster against the proposals.  Peter Jones, lead Lib Dem on Chiltern District Council, and I recently had a letter published in Bucks Free Press endorsing the Lord’s Select Committee Report which questioned the economic case for HS2. (Mix96 interview)

"It is vital to support a living wage of £10 per hour, to throw out the bedroom tax which effects the vulnerable, continue to oppose HS2 & fracking which brings no benefit to the Chilterns but affects us all."

Gill supports the Green Party's stand against HS2 and that it would be disastrous for the economy, environment and local communities in the Chesham and Amersham constituency.
